Job Description
The Medical Assisting Externship Coordinator plays a vital role in supporting student transitions from classroom instruction to hands-on training at externship sites, with a focus on employment outcomes. This position is responsible for managing all aspects of the externship experience, from site development and student placement to compliance, documentation, and post-externship employment conversions. While prior experience as a Medical Assistant is not required, successful candidates will demonstrate strong project management, relationship-building, and follow-through skills, preferably with experience in healthcare, workforce development, or community outreach. A key performance benchmark is converting at least 50% of externship placements into job offers, with a goal of 70%.
Job Description
- Secure, maintain, and expand a network of externship sites with a focus on employers seeking to hire students post-externship.
- Coordinate timely student placements to ensure the externship begins concurrently with the start of the externship module.
- Monitor student attendance and completion of externship hours; track progress to ensure timely graduation.
- Conduct site visits, mid-point, and final evaluations to assess the quality of the learning environment and student performance.
- Ensure all required immunizations and documentation are completed prior to site placement.
- Collaborate with Career Services to align externship opportunities with potential employment outcomes.
- Maintain detailed records and documentation in accordance with programmatic, accreditation, and regulatory requirements.
- Educate and support site supervisors and students on externship policies, expectations, and procedures.
- Provide exceptional student service through regular communication, troubleshooting concerns, and supporting retention and program completion.
- Represent the program professionally with community partners and employers; participate in career fairs or other outreach events as needed.
Full-time position with responsibilities of approximately 40 hours per week at the institution.
Campus-based, Hybrid. Minimum of three days on campus and two remote/telecommuting after completion of training period where employee can work autonomously. Days on campus may vary based on campus or student support needs. Generally, one late shift per week, until 7:00pm – 8:00pm, will be needed to ensure quality support and availability to evening students.
