Job description:

We are seeking a Senior Accountant/Auditor to support government accounting and audit efforts in the U.S. Virgin Islands. This role requires residency in, or relocation to, the Virgin Islands, along with frequent travel to additional island territories. You will play a central role in helping jurisdictions meet audit deadlines, strengthen internal controls, and modernize financial operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop Work Plans: Create detailed plans outlining the approach for addressing audit backlogs and ensuring timely single audit submissions.
  • Establish Communication Plans: Build and manage communication protocols among contractors, insular governments, and independent auditors.
  • Support Government Accounting Tasks: Assist with accounting activities directly related to audit readiness and submissions.
  • Conduct Audit Project Management:
    • Understand jurisdiction-specific work plans
    • Track project timelines
    • Communicate with audit teams and government entities daily
    • Identify, escalate, and resolve current or potential issues
  • Develop Accounting Procedures: Create standardized processes for completing reconciliations on time and with accuracy.
  • Improve System Use: Draft procedures for using accounting system modules and generating system reports.

Qualifications:

Senior Accountant/Auditor Qualifications

Four or more years of progressive experience in professional accounting or auditing roles

Bachelors degree in Accounting or a bachelors in Finance or Business

CPA certification required

  • Strong experience reviewing complex financial and accounting transactions, including historical financial records and general ledger balances, with an emphasis on investment accounting
  • Proven ability to prepare journal entries and work within financial accounting systems
  • Experience managing or coordinating the work of Accountants and/or Auditors, including acting as a team lead, project coordinator, or liaison with client organizations
  • Demonstrated experience conducting financial transaction research and analysis, including reviewing work papers and documentation necessary to establish a complete audit trail
  • Ability to prepare milestone status reports, progress summaries, and presentations for internal teams and client stakeholders
  • Experience with at least one financial management information system (FMIS), such as:
    • Tyler Munis Enterprise ERP

    • Microsoft FMIS
    • OR demonstrated proficiency with comparable financial management systems
